Europe’s summer of 2026 has made the financial relevance of physical climate risk increasingly tangible. European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reports exceptionally warm and dry conditions across much of Europe, with repeated record-breaking heatwaves, drought, very low flows in major rivers and numerous wildfires. The European Environment Agency estimates that weather- and climate-related extremes caused EUR 822 billion in economic losses in the EU between 1980 and 2024, with 25% of those losses occurring in 2021–2024.
At the Copernicus Thematic Workshop on Climate Risks for Insurance and Finance in Brussels in June, regulators, banks, insurers and climate-data experts focused on a practical challenge: how to translate location-specific climate hazards into physical impacts, financial losses and credit risk, and how Earth-observation data can support that process.
CLC continues that discussion with EY and ING. The webinar asks what physical climate risk means for corporate decision-making and how financial institutions are beginning to integrate it into credit and portfolio management.
- Eva Toppari, Senior Manager,Climate Change and Sustainability Services, EY
Climate risk in transition: from assessment and disclosure to financial decision-making - Nicola Wagner-Rundell, Senior ESG Manager, Integrated Risk / ESG Risk, ING Group
Global banking perspective on physical climate risk: from hazard data to credit and portfolio decisions
The session will explore how climate-risk assessment is evolving, how physical impacts can be translated into financial risk, how adaptation and insurance affect the risk picture, and what companies and financial institutions can do now despite remaining data and modelling uncertainty.
The presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.
The webinar is part of CLC’s Finance series and is open to CLC members and other interested participants.
Welcome to join the discussion!
