Creating the enabling conditions for near-zero emission steelmaking in Europe

Nordic steelmakers call for enabling conditions to scale near-zero emission steel

The EU steel industry is poised to become a global climate leader by transitioning to low and near-zero emission steel production. Several frontrunner companies are already investing in hydrogen-based and electrified steelmaking based on fossil-free electricity. Yet, the full realization of this transition requires enabling conditions that EU institutions have an important role in shaping.

The Nordic Near-Zero Emission Steel group highlights five priorities:

  • Ensure clean power infrastructure deployment
  • Support clean hydrogen deployment at scale
  • Boost scrap steel availability and circularity in the steel industry
  • Streamline permitting and grid connections for clean industrial
    projects
  • Unlock industrial transition finance at the scale needed

With many European steel facilities nearing reinvestment, decisive action now is critical to cut emissions, strengthen industrial competitiveness, and secure Europe’s leadership in green steel.
