Protecting a level playing field in climate policy through the rapid and effective implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

Nordic steelmakers urge EU to stay on the course and implement the CBAM definitive period as planned

The European Union is at a pivotal moment. With the upcoming decision on the 2040 climate target, the Nordic Near-Zero Emission Steel group, among many others, are calling for continued bold action and a predictable operating environment based on an ambitious -90% net greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal for the EU, and a level playing field that enables leading companies to make the investments to reach that goal.

The Nordic Near-Zero Emission Steel group urges the EU to implement the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on schedule in 2026 and expand it to cover indirect emissions. They stress that timely and effective implementation is vital to prevent carbon leakage, protect first movers, and provide the policy certainty needed for near-zero emission steel investments. With major reinvestment decisions ahead, a strong CBAM will ensure Europe remains a leader in both climate ambition and industrial competitiveness.
